EM FELLOWSHIP

The North Alabama USACS Health Emergency Medicine Fellowship provides a unique opportunity for primary care physicians to become board certified in emergency medicine. USACS Health’s Emergency Medicine Fellowship is recognized by the American Academy of Emergency Physicians. Fellowship graduates will qualify for written and oral exams to receive Board Certification in Emergency Medicine (BCEM) by the American Board of Physician Specialists.

The North Alabama fellowship is hosted at Cullman Regional Medical Center in Cullman, Alabama and Highlands Medical Center, in Scottsboro, Alabama which are located conveniently between Huntsville and Birmingham metropolitan areas.

“With a diverse patient population, high acuity, and complex presentations, our ED Fellows gain a very robust clinical experience.”

Both sites’ recently renovated emergency department offers ample rooms for teaching and learning Emergemcy Medicine. Cullman Regional has an annual volume of 50,000 visits. With a diverse patient population, high acuity and complex presentations, our ED Fellows gain a very robust clinical exposure. The program is designed to allow fellows exposure to and management of specialized emergency cases including critical care, chest pain and STEMI, stroke, trauma, pediatrics, and OBGYN. Opportunities for procedures are abundant and will put you ahead of your peers.

How We Teach

Clinical Duties include 12-14 shifts per month in the ED. USACS Fellows participate in didactic lecture series each Thursday, where they learn high-impact topics to prepare them for EM Boards and future careers as EM physicians capable of working at any emergency room in the country.

We supplement didactic lectures with longitudinal Board Prep throughout the year so you will succeed on exam day.

“This Fellowship program prepares you to succeed in any Emergency Department in the country.”

Special Topics Courses are scattered throughout the Fellowship as well, such as an ENT skills Course, Ortho and Splinting Course,  Dental Emergency Course, and multiple Ultrasound Courses to name a few.

Fellowship Seminars

Cullman Fellows also get to experience our unique Fellowship Seminars– special teaching opportunities such as our Ballistics Injuries Seminar at a large firearms center, a NASCAR Experience at the Talledega Speedway to learn about MVAs and Traumas; a Snake Bite Symposium taught by wilderness medicine experts at the Birmingham Zoo, and multiple EMS and critical care ride-alongs, just to name a few. The curriculum also includes instruction on essential emergency medicine procedures, airway management, and ED Bedside Ultrasound.
